The Creed of a New York State Firefighter

My SCBA is my best friend. It is my life.

I must master it as I must master my life.

My SCBA, without me, is useless.

I must breathe true through my SCBA.

I must breathe truer than the fire that is trying to kill me.

I must extinguish it before it burns me. I will…

My SCBA and I know that what counts in firefighting are not the gallons we flow, the noise of our saws, nor the risks we take.

We know it is saving lives that count. We will save…
