The Canaan Task Force was dispatched by Columbia 911 at 3:34am for a reported structure fire at the Kendall residence at 13249 Route 22 in the Town of Canaan. Fire companies from Canaan, Lebanon Valley, East Chatham and Red Rock responded.

Canaan Car 1 reported a fire at the electric meter of the residence and requested NYSE&G to respond. NYSE&G responded from a location on County Route 5 where they were on scene of a utility pole fire with the Canaan Fire Company. NYSE&G disconnected the power to the residence so firefighters could extinguish the fire. The fire was contained to the area around the electric meter. There was smoke damage throughout the home.

The resident, Kevin Kendall, stated he heard a noise and woke up and could not find anything and went back to bed. He then woke up to the smoke detectors going off and discovered the fire. Canaan Car 1 reported a limb was found on the electric line on the driveway to the residence. The ground wire to the home was then charged with 2400 volts causing the fire.

Lebanon Valley Rescue was on the scene. No injuries were reported.

The New York State Police were on scene and assisted with traffic. Route 22 was closed during the incident.

After the alarm and while returning to service a pumper from East Chatham narrowly missed being struck by a tree that came down in front of them on Route 22 near the fire scene.

Canaan units were in service at 6:31am.
