The East Chatham Fire Company held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday August
2, 2011. Construction is to begin on August 6th by Caiola Construction of New Lebanon, NY. They will be constructing a 1500
square foot addition to the existing firehouse for the purpose of additional space for trucks and equipment, and for a second
floor training facility.
The original building, circa 1950's is on the site of an old cheese factory. The present
three bay apparatus deck was constructed in 1973.
The East Chatham Fire Company was established in 1934 covers
portions of the Towns of Chatham and Canaan, including portions of the Taconic State Parkway and the Governor Thomas E. Dewey
New York State Thruway and CSX railroad tracks.
The company responds to roughly 120 calls per year.
Called upon for both fire and EMS responses, the fire company currently operates five trucks: two pumpers, a pump
truck for accessing water sources, a brush truck and their new 2012 EMS truck.
Chief is Matt Distin. 1st Assistant
Chief is Dennis Gawron and 2nd Assistant Chief is Alan Besterman.
President is Wayne Gearing. 1st director and
construction committee chairman is Rick Newton. 2nd director is Robert K. Rugen.
